Sakura Kawakami

Kia ora, I'm Sakura

I'm a Business Analytics graduate from Elon University with a focus on Indigenous AI governance and Māori data sovereignty.

Over the past year, I've interviewed Māori leaders about how they're navigating AI, the gaps between governance ideals and reality, and what they actually need to protect their data and futures. That work became this book and the beginning of EDT Māori AI.

Why I wrote the book

The same conversation about Māori data sovereignty was happening everywhere—and nobody was writing it down. This book collects that kōrero: voices from trustees, and data kaitiaki, consistently evolving their whakaaro.

It is not a book about whether AI is good or bad. It is a book about who decides.
